Blocked by Biggie and the Sun
Feb. 25th, 2026 09:40 amI spent a fair amount of time yesterday organizing my now totally dirt simple finances. It was mostly moving inactive accounts out of sight and setting up some targets for the others. I do not track every penny, but I do want to be able to look at a glance and see where my money is going. Mostly I want to ensure I know where the truly discretionary hot spots are in case I need to trim back for some reason.
Yo, Biggie, so far you are not discretionary but keep up that annoying behavior like this morning and that could change!
I've got nothing on the agenda for today and I'm not feeling very people-y. I have the second half of yesterday's lunch for today and enough for dinner so I might not even leave here again today. Oh wait, I need to take the trash out.
I did watch the new Dick Wolfe show CIA last night. I'm giving it one more episode. It sucked but maybe that was just the groundlaying. His stuff is usually so painless and easy to watch while knitting.
And that's it. That's my action packed, fun filled, crazy old lady life. It may not suit everyone but it's really nice for me.
Reading Wednesday
Feb. 25th, 2026 07:10 amCurrently reading: A Drop Of Corruption by Robert Jackson Bennett. This continues to be really fun. I wish there was more Ana, but her more distant presence in this is balanced by just how weird and gross the worldbuilding is. All magic in this world is drawn from the blood of leviathans, giant eldritch horrors that live in the sea and during the wet season, come on shore to try to kill everyone, and the murder plot revolves much more around the technicalities of this than the first book did. I'm here for weird body horror and squishy stuff so this works for me.
I am a wee bit confused over Din's motivations; he wants to join the Legion, which is the division of the military that blows up leviathans, rather than investigating crimes with Ana, which is a fairly major switch from the first book. But he can't do it because he's deep in debt to an insurer who covered his now-dead father's medical bills, and the job is so dangerous that the insurer would never be able to collect. Which, do not get me wrong, is a cool motivation! But it does seem like a break from the way his character is initially presented, and so far the only reason for the switch seems to be that he hooked up with a soldier at the end of the first book.
Anyway I just got to the part where he goes inside the Shroud, which is a giant cyst in the water where they extract leviathan blood, inhabited by augurs, who are altered to be incredibly good at working with vast amounts of data but go insane after three years and can only communicate by tapping. It's super cool.

It been quite a week
Feb. 24th, 2026 08:38 pmIt's been one week. The last time I was going to write it was my Aunt Rosalie’s Death anniversary. It was also Tigers Anniversary of crossing the rainbow bridge. I regret not calling or writing to Rosalie more often.
My neighbor Rosalie died earlier this month, and her funeral was scheduled the same weekend as my brunch. It felt a bit awkward initially, but I believe I managed it effectively. The daughter requested the clubhouse for the post-funeral gathering that day. President Frank called and asked if I could move or cancel it for that day and I couldn’t or wouldn’t. He was understanding. Their reception was at Stone Bridge Restaurant.
The brunch was great. I was nervous but Laura had my back. I went to the store for ground coffee and half and half for brunch and home. Laura arrived, and together we went to Big Y to buy sandwiches, a birthday cake, and some snacks for her in preparation for the storm.
We began preparations, and the initial arrivals were several new participants from Milford.
Everyone arrived, and after chatting and eating, three new attendees left around 1. The rest of us played Taboo. I really didn’t like it. Some of the questions were quite provocative We cleaned up the clubhouse and ended the brunch.
I went home and relaxed and then to Liz’s to visit her and get her mail. I had to bring utensils that someone thought were my personal ones , after that was done I came back and relaxed for an hour then left for the nighttime activities
I had the opportunity to meet Gillion, Faith, Paula, and Paula's friend at Home Restaurant in Branford. It was a birthday dinner for Paula and then after we were going to Legacy Theater in Stonycreek. Unfortunately, I got lost on my way to the theater and the GPS was not working. I was so upset by this I was so late. I saw the last hour of The show. It ended at 9 and we all said good night and headed home. Going home was much easier than getting there. I suspect it was quite beautiful and what I did see of the area was but it was secluded.
I don’t remember exactly when I arrived home, but I did park in the visitors’ lot before the storm started. Snowfall began on Sunday, followed by a storm that deposited no less than one foot of accumulation by the end of the day. Yale, the city, and my supervisor all emailed instructions not to come to campus on Monday. Those who could work remotely should and those who couldn’t work remotely still got paid. I received payment for cleaning the house, shopping for groceries, and watching television. They named this blizzard of 2026 Calvin. We are getting more by the end of the week as well. I am over the snow.
Tax Man
Feb. 24th, 2026 08:47 amLast night I got an email from a different CPA at the firm (I haven't had to deal with flaky at all this year), asking how I wanted to handle my $5000 refund!! Whoa. The email explained that it is enough to cover estimated takes for this year with a $1,300 overage - did I want to just pay up and then get the overage into my checking account?? FUCK yeah!!!! So. Taxes paid for this year's return. Taxes paid for next year's return. Enough cash to pay the CPA and still some left over? At least enough to pay for a couple of Biggie's vet visits. Yafuckinghooooo! What a load off. No details yet. I expect they will come today but that is a big relief. And from here on own my tax situation will be totally simple Simon. Nice.
Tuesday, house cleaning day. Yeah.
I've been rewatching Season 1 of The Pitt, before I watch Season 2. I'm still reading Dark Ride by Lou Benney and it's a great read. It has not gone where I thought it would which makes it even better. I'm a little more than half way through and already thinking I want to slow down the read to make it last longer.
The Mariner game is on TV today which will be fun.
I am so relieved about those damn taxes. I didn't even realize how stressed I was.
About The Vulgarian's 2026 State of the (Dis)Union Speech?
Feb. 24th, 2026 07:46 amUp On My Soapbox.....
Feb. 23rd, 2026 02:38 pmUnfortunately during the show when two Black actors were presenting an award this man shouted out the N word.
And now everybody are having a hissy fit about it.
The BAFTA people are bending over backward to apologize to the two Black actors.
IMHO the only thing they should be apologizing for is that they didn't edit their delayed broadcast and it went out to the public viewing.
He also was apparently F Bombing, but I guess that's okay.
THE MAN HAS A DISEASE!!!!!!!!!!
I guess after this incident we will have to shut away people with Tourette's because heaven forbid somebody's feeling get hurt.
If I was in a room with somebody that had Tourette's Syndrome and they shouted out FAGGOT, I sure as hell would not be condemning them. :o :o :o
And now I step down from my SoapBox...

Monday
Feb. 23rd, 2026 08:47 amSteroid shots make my foot feel instantly better for a couple of days and then there are about 3 days of back to ouch before it starts working for good. Then in about a week, it will turn black and blue and stay that way for about a month. We are back to the ouchy part. But I was able to walk to the pool and back so, not horrible.
When I redid all my mp3's, I dumped them into folders - 30 files in each folder. Zero curation. I think Karen Carpenter had a beautiful voice but the current batch I'm listening to is about 25 Karen Carpenter songs and that's really more than anyone needs in a row. So I'm now swapping out for the next folder of 30. This batch has no clues. The files are named 1.mp3 and 2.mp3 so no telling what the fuck is on them. Come Wednesday - the next lap swim day - I'll probably be begging for more Karen Carpenter.
I have a plastic shoebox full of batteries. I have a few C's. a few D's. A fuckload of AA's. Some buttons - various sizes. A couple of really weird ones and 1 AAA. What do I need right now? 2 AAA's, of course. Sigh.
Another Paramount+ treat. One of my all time favorite sit coms. No one watched it but me, I think so it only lasted 2 seasons but now both seasons are on Paramount+. Superior Donuts. Good cast - phenomenal writing. Still very fun. I'm treating myself to an episode a day.
I've never put together a Lego set. I've thought about it but resisted knowing that it's likely a rabbit hole for me. Plus now I have bunnies to make 3 a day and I'm on track so far. And then I have to sew pockets onto my swim robes. I have projects. I don't need more. Plus, there are all those hours that

Feb. 22nd, 2026 08:37 amI love a little Hazelnut flavor in my coffee now and again. The other day, at Safeway, I picked up a small box of Hazelnut flavored coffee pods. I brewed one yesterday for elbow coffee. I think I knew this but had forgotten. Those Hazelnut pods are HAZELNUT!!!! I wanted a hint and they are like a tsunami. BUT I drink my coffee black so, honestly, only wash my mug once in a great while so this morning's coffee had the perfect hint of Hazelnut. Win?
This morning I got up and put the comforter and pillow cases into the washing machine and changed the sheet with the help of Biggie which made it, of course, way more of a chore but it is done. And the comforter will be done in another hour. My washer has this lovely heavy bedding function. It probably does nothing special but I love having it.
Then I went to the pool and had a wonderful swim.
I have nothing on the calendar this week at all. There are baseball games every afternoon on the radio. Yesterday, they had a 'new' announcer for a few innings. I thought we had all of the worst baseball announcers already but wait, there's more! This guy was, apparently, a Mariner pitcher for a minute just before the pandemic. He talks way too fast and says absolutely nothing interesting. It hurt my ears. He said that he would be on the TV broadcasts for some games this year. Fine by me since I mute those anyway. Geesh.
I have 20 more bunnies to make before Saturday. Shouldn't be a problem. There are 2.95 done already.
I have my good book to read and tons of stuff on TV. There is a new (to me) Dawn French comedy on Paramount+ called "Can You Keep A Secret". I have two more episodes to watch. It's kind of hilarious in a very Dawn French way. She gets me.
When my brother was here, we got rid of a lot of shit and shifted and organized the rest. I could not have done it without him and it's still reaping such rewards. It's just a joy to be able to find stuff, to easily put stuff away and to have it all look so nice. My utility room went from a claustrophobic mess to a joy and the storage room... perfection. Yesterday, I shifted some stuff around so easily. I do love this apartment. But even more so now.
When the closet got redone, I took down the cat cam since I moved their beds but now Biggie has a new spot so I think I need to put it back. EASY to do since it's just on the shelf in the storage unit with the correct cable and wall wart. Soooooooo organized am I.

I hope you have a fantastic day. :)

A Day In The Life.....
Feb. 22nd, 2026 08:09 amThey are kind of a small/medium sized black mixed with brown birds.
There has as been off and on a whole flock of them in my front yard. :o
I tried to google Minnesota birds but not finding anything, and of course I can't find my Minnesota Birds book. :(

The Birds Are on Their Way Back
Feb. 21st, 2026 05:06 pmFor the last two days, I've heard the geese overhead and today I saw a pair scrambling at speed for the pond in the woods behind my house. I love living here so much.
I put a suet block out for the winter - the birds in Texas usually devoured it, but it looks almost completely untouched. Maybe all the birds leave? I'm still adjusting to life in the northern forest, and I don't remember enough about how it worked when I was growing up in the mountains. Surely cardinals stay all winter?
I'm planning to clean out the seed feeder and get it out tomorrow. Maybe that will be more tempting.
